Good Nutrition

Dr. Family Fitness, also known as George Cerezo, wants to remind you that foods contain the nutrients that are essential to good health.  They provide energy and allow your body to grow.  These nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, mineral and water.

Healthy adults all have about the same nutrient requirements,  though men and women have somewhat different needs because of differences in body size and composition.  However, children and pregnant women need higher amounts of nutrients.

Good nutrition involves eating a variety of foods because no one food will supply all the nutrients your body needs. The main groups are:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Meats, fish, poultry
  • Whole grains
  • Dairy products

Eating from each food group every day will help prevent nutrient deficiency.  Also, try to vary the foods you eat within any particular food group from day to day.  In other words, eat a variety of fruits, such as pears, strawberries, cantaloupe, or an orange rather than an apple every day.

In general, Dr. Family Fitness, suggests a daily calorie intake of 50% carbohydrates, 30% protein and not more than 20% fat.

It is also important to be careful about the daily amount of salt and sugar you take in.  Foods high in salt cause you to retain fluids which helps contribute to water gain and can lead to an unhealthy heart.
