Propecia

Propecia is a medicine that belongs to the group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors help block the body’s production of a male hormone that causes the prostate to increase in size.  This condition is called, “prostatic hypertrophy” or BPH.  Propecia can be used with other medicines to treat (BPH).

The generic name of Propecia is finasteride. Trade names for Propecia are Proscar and Propecia.

Women can’t take Propecia. It is only for men.

Propecia is available in tablets and is taken orally. Propecia should only be taken once a day, and can be taken with or without food.  It is best to take Propecia at the same time every day.

If you use Propecia to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the usual dosage is 5 mg a day.

When Propecia is used to treat hair loss, the dosage is 1 mg a day.

Propecia should never be used by children.

Missing a dose: If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember it. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double dose.

Overdose: Do not take Propecia in larger than prescribed amounts. If you overdose Propecia, you should contact your doctor or health care provider immediately.
