Dr. Family Talks About Propecia

Propecia is a medicine that belongs to the group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors help block the body’s production of a male hormone that causes the prostate to increase in size.  This condition is called, “prostatic hypertrophy” or BPH.  Propecia can be used with other medicines to treat (BPH).

The generic name of Propecia is finasteride. Trade names for Propecia are Proscar and Propecia.

Women can’t take Propecia. It is only for men.
